New York, New York
2019
Located at the intersection of Broadway and 86th Street in the Upper West Side this duplex penthouse allows the family to enjoy a personal oasis above the bustling city. Originally designed in 1994 with Celeste Umpierre as the Project Architect at LRA, the owners wanted to renovate their New York abode to adapt it to their growing family. By making notes of the family’s changing interaction with the space, we remodeled the living/dining area, children’s rooms, and entrance foyers. New built-in cabinetry was further incorporated throughout the penthouse to unify the design and maximize utility. The two existing entries were carefully reversed to respond to their everyday rituals. In order to facilitate a smooth transition into the living and dining spaces, the entrance closest to the elevator was carefully designed into the main processional entry by transforming the guest bedroom into an adaptable extended foyer. The children’s area was renovated for the first time with connections to the private hallway leading up to the parent’s bedroom. Prioritizing the needs and behaviors of children, the new interior included softer furnishings and a neutral color palette. Some detailed interior changes were executed to allow for more usability for the penthouse whilst increasing the overall openness of the space. A new flat screen TV was mounted on the wall of the Living Room freeing up space for a desk area. A well proportioned glass table was placed in the Dining Room giving the room a wider sense of space.
